Bella Dora

Malaga-born Antonia Galindo achieved great fame as a flamenco dancer. The farruca and the garrotín were her specialties. She was known as Bella Dora or Dora la Gitana, and she captivated audiences in cities like Almería, Barcelona, and Valencia with her dances and grace. In 1909, she appeared on stage wearing trousers, which caused a great scandal. For some, Dora's trousers were more provocative than the nudity of some other artists: "I suppose the most modest would prefer the nudity of today to Dora's immodest movements in men's clothing, very tight-fitting and of very fine fabric" (El Bloque, 1-6-1909). The lyrics of her garrotines also scandalized the public, and on several occasions, the dancer ended up being arrested, as in Zaragoza, where Bella Dora, "annoyed by the audience's hisses, sang two offensive verses to those present, who protested loudly, causing an enormous scandal. The uproar did not cease until Bella Dora was arrested" (El Noroeste, 17-7-1909). Also in Palencia, attendees tried to burn down the theater, and only Dora's arrest stopped them. Later, Dora had to reappear on the artistic scene with a more modest image that pleased the attendees.
