John Cadbury was a Quaker and believed that alcohol was the main cause of poverty, so he began distributing tea, coffee, and chocolate. His first shop was already very original and attracted many curious visitors, thanks to its modern window display, visible from the street, but especially to the Chinese employee dressed in traditional clothing. In 1831, he and his brother opened Cadbury Brothers, a chocolate factory, which he had to leave shortly afterward due to health reasons. John dedicated the rest of his life to social work until his death at the age of 88. Already during that time, he led campaigns against alcohol, cruelty to animals, and child labor for chimney sweeps. John and his brother had conceived the idea of ​​creating a model village for their workers that would remove them from the filth and slums, a project that their children carried out in 1879. The Bournville district has been dry (no alcohol in pubs, bars, or shops) for over 100 years. Its residents have fought to keep it that way, winning a court battle in March 2007 with Britain's largest supermarket chain, Tesco, to prevent the sale of alcohol in the town.
