Who would have thought that one of America's most beloved painters wouldn't pick up a brush until well past seventy-five years old? The story of Anna Mary Robertson —Grandma Moses, to everyone— is proof that it's never too late to start.

She was born in 1860 on a farm in New York State, into a humble family, and from a very young age, she worked hard: first as a maid in other people's homes and then in the fields, alongside her husband. They had ten children, but only five reached adulthood. Between tasks, however, she always found time to work with her hands: she embroidered pictures with wool yarns, full of landscapes and memories of rural life.

When arthritis prevented her from continuing to thread her needle, her sister suggested she try painting. And so, in her old age, Grandma Moses began to paint. A collector happened to notice some of her paintings displayed in a shop window, and that chance encounter led her to New York museums, where that rural grandmother suddenly became a celebrity.

Never having received artistic training, she painted from memory the world she knew: farm work, the four seasons, village festivals... Scenes full of tiny figures, snow, harvests, and life, with a fresh and luminous style that captivated everyone. She painted over fifteen hundred paintings and didn't put down her brushes until she was 101, demonstrating that her talent lay not in learned technique, but in the pure and loving gaze of someone who paints what they love.
